Avery looked over at Zane. He was sleeping so peaceful in the middle of the bed on his back with both arms thrown above his head. Sleep still eluded her. So many thoughts and emotions raced through her mind. How would things be if she would have stayed and told him about the baby? Would it have changed anything? Or did it need to happen this way?

She saw a different side of Zander these past weeks. Should she be hopeful and follow her heart? Or trust experience and keep her distance?

She flipped the covers back and climbed out of bed. Looking back to make sure she hadn’t disturbed Zane, she padded to the door. The room was lit with a sliver of light from the bathroom door ajar. She always kept a light on in case he needed to get up at night. The clubhouse was quiet. She eased the door open. Neon signs above the bar cast a glow across the room.

King was dozing on the couch when a hand gently combed through his curls and caressed his cheek. He could almost feel her touch. His mouth turned up at the thought. There it was again. So real. Now the heat of her hand warmed his chest. He reached for it. He could feel it.

“Zander.”

His eyes popped open, and he bolted to his elbow with her hand still in his. “What’s wrong?”

Without a word, she tugged on his hand.

He studied her a moment.

She calmly smiled down at him. She stood in front of him in a t-shirt− his t-shirt− legs and feet bare.

He swung his feet to the floor, stood, and followed her to the bedroom. The boy was still asleep in the bed. Puppy still curled on the blanket. He twisted and watched her as she quietly pushed the door closed.

She nodded to the bed. “It’s not like we have never slept in the same bed before. Sleep with your son.”

He didn’t argue. His teeth shone in the dark room.

She padded to the other side and climbed back in. Soon, Avery drifted into a deep peaceful sleep.
